Janet's Annual Climb

In 2008 Adele and Janet topped out on Everest together but yesterday they crawled to the top of the Fiacall Ridge in the Cairngorms. With  a good forecast for the East the ladies had an early start from then West and headed East. The slopes were in a considerable Avalanche category so the pair headed for the ridge following in the footsteps of other teams. The wind began to pick up and soon they were swallowing spindrift and being battered by ferocious winds. The rope was used to keep them both firmly attached to the mountain. The thought of that second route diminished as they fought their way to the top of the ridge on their knees. To finish the day off Janet decided a visit to the top of Cairngorm was essential much to Pennington’s great joy at breaking trail yet again!

Faces beaten to  a red pulp the two enjoyed their wild day but have wimped out to an indoor venue for tomorrow where Janet is going to go leash less in preparation for her trip to Alpamayo with Jagged Globe this June.

Jagged Globe Winter Mountaineering

The last two days of the winter mountaineering course sped by. On Thursday Adele and Peter tackled Curved ridge which just got better and better. After the first ice pitch which Adele let Sam test the quality of the ice, the two Jagged Globe teams romped up the ridge enjoying a truely Scottish day;

Fantastic views from the summit and an easy descent finished off the day well.

On Friday Adele swapped partners and set of around the Ballachuilish Horseshoe with Dave. The rocky steps proved to be entertaining as the wind gathered speed. On the first top they waited for the wind to die down before heading off to the final Munro. After twenty minutes all our key factors were becoming hazards; no visibility, avalanche prone slope and winds that were preventing progress. With no hesitation we turned back and headed for our escape ridge. Careful navigation and a “this is for real “situation only emphasised what Scottish Winter Mountaineering is all about.

Blue Sky Day 16th March
As we cleared the ice of the car's this morning it was evident that we were in store for one of those fantastic blue sky day's. Turning up for work at the Jagged Globe staff room Adele was as usual excited about another Scottish day. Peter and Adele teamed up and drove to Anoch Mor where the Gondola saved hours of wading and took them into the sunshine and snow. Peter wanted to learn skills that would enable him and his wife to do some general winter mountaineering in Scotland. After bucket seats, stomper's direct and indirect belays Peter and Adele decided to make their way to the summit. Navigating for training rather than neccessity they reached the top at 3pm. The snow was deep and a pair of skis would have certainly made progress easier and quicker but determined to top out they perserverd and were rewarded with this.

This evening Hanna made a roast dinner for his girls Sam and Adele to fuel them for another day on the hill tommorow.

Back to Scotland 15th March

Paul Scott on Pinnacle Ridge Patterdale Nov 2010

Adele has now returned to Scotland for the last two weeks of her Scottish Winter season. The Snow has returned and after being in the South where Spring has sprung the white stuff looked just as exciting as it did when it first arrived in November last year. Thats four full months and probably still more we can enjoy winter mountaineering in the UK.
Adele was not on holiday in the South but busy talking at the International Women's day dinner for Deloitte and training with her group from Royal Grammar School Worcester in preparation for their expedition to Ladakh this Summer.

Adele is becoming accustomed to after dinner speaking and  accompanied by Paula Duncan ( Psychologist) the duo are getting some excellent feedback from their double act.

I really enjoyed Adele and Paula's talk. Adele was absolutely brilliant and I thought the whole evening went very smoothly with Dinner and talks combining well.

Adele Pennington Mountaineering is celebrating its 1st Birthday on the 31st March and will be publishing  its first E-mail news. This will be sent to all those people or sponsors who have supported APM. If you also whish to receive this E-mail news then please text or E-mail Adele.

Tower Ridge, The Runnel and Smiles 5/6th March
It was a bit of a shock when Adele mentioned Tower Ridge on Friday evening to Claire and Noelle who had just landed in Scotland. With a blue sky day ahead it had to be the route of choice. Soon everyone was excited as plans were confirmed for a 7am start in the morning.

Claire and Noelle at the start of Tower Ridge only another 600m to go!

After an ungainly ascent of the first chimney by all three members of the team we all settled into the route. With only one other group on the ridge who soon passed the chatting ladies who we were in their element. So much so we forgot about pictures but whooped and oohed at the magnificance of the Ben. The route was in superb condition and very icy making it a true classic. On Sunday the forecast for the East was better and we decided to head to the Cairngorms ( nothing to do with the short walk in).

I dont eat butter just Chutney!

There seemed to more chat about chutney than preparing themselves to lead the Runnel! but eventually we were off and heading up to the base of the route.

Noelle on the approach to the start.

Soon they were off swapping leads and concentrating on the climb ahead ( Well sometimes).

Finally the chatter stopped as Claire made a great lead up the final steep chimney and climbed over the solid cornice.

Claire focusing on the situation! on the final pitch of the Runnel (II)

Finally the girls topped out onto the plateau and gazed in amazement at a sight they had not seen before whilst they  stood proud and smiling after their two climbs of the weekend. What a weekend!
Today, Adele is sadly driving South for a week but will return to Scotland next Sunday.
